How do you intend to use the four areas of media theoretical framework to communicate meaning and meet the requirements of your chosen brief?
My brief is to produce a lifestyle magazine targeted towards 16-25 year olds. Lifestyle magazines for young adults do not seem to exist currently so many of the conventions I have researched will be modified to remain relevant to people of that age group. My research shows that lifestyle magazines are usually aimed at the target demographic of young females featuring some of the following conventions:
- Representation of strong, independent women
- Mise en scene (colourful and feminine hair and make up, aspirational for young females, heroin, sexy, powerful, can do it all)
- Colourful lighting, not dark or aggressive image, very warm and welcoming poses with gentle expressions
- Cover/ sell lines - longer lines, less punchy, playful and soft language
- Price between £5-£6, like many lifestyle magazines
My magazine will include topics such as, mental health, sexual orientation as well as references to technology and social media. By embracing these topics in my magazine it will engage massively with younger readers. My magazine is aimed at a majority female audience as it will feature representations of young females the age of 16-25 years old which will attract my target audience and will have a topic of female empowerment and acceptance. However, through the representation of male models it will naturally appeal to a small male audience as well and include conversations on the LGBTQ+ community when talking about acceptance. The price of my magazine will be £3.50 as I know that this age group has a smaller budget to spend and I want everyone in my target demographic to be able to access the magazine.
My brief is to produce a lifestyle magazine website targeted towards 16- 25 year olds. Online magazines are more targeted to older audiences as they also view the news and other media websites on their phones. I will make my website appeal to my target audience by including an audio visual video if 'What's in my bag?' with a celebrity as well as links on my magazine that will direct my audience towards the website magazine. Through research I have found that lifestyle magazines mainly target a female audience featuring some of the following conventions:
-Celebrity orientated, celebrity models and news
-Majority female dominated images
-Mise en scene - colourful and bright
-Political opinions and news events, DIY, cooking and cocktails
My online magazine will feature representations of men and woman, with dominantly female models. I will include the topics mental health, apartment essentials, cooking, celebrity news, fashion and a video of a celebrity talking about their day to day necessities.
How do you intend to link your media products to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the digitally convergent nature of your media production?
To encourage my audience to refer to my magazines website after reading the magazine is by having links directing my audience towards the website to view exclusive interviews with a celebrity or an aspirational figure in more depth. My magazine will easily accessible in online or physical form as many readers prefer viewing magazines online. My magazine and magazine website will both have the option of being able to subscribe and get more exclusive detail which will be featured on the cover of my magazine. The same adverts will be featured on both contents and website to increase convergence and generate revenue across both platforms.
